Boiler flow temperature is the temperature of the water leaving your boiler and travelling around the heating system. It has a direct effect on how quickly your radiators warm up, how comfortably the house heats and how much gas the boiler uses.
Many boilers are left at their factory setting, which is often higher than the home actually needs. Turning the flow temperature down can improve efficiency, particularly with a modern condensing boiler. However, there is no single setting that suits every property. Boiler type, radiator size, insulation and the weather all make a difference. Regular boiler servicing also helps make sure the appliance is operating efficiently and safely.

Recommended Boiler Flow Temperatures
For most homes with a modern condensing boiler and radiators, a flow temperature of around 55°C to 60°C is a sensible starting point. The lower end of that range gives the boiler a better chance to operate in condensing mode, where it recovers heat that would otherwise be lost through the flue.
A common customer question is whether turning the flow temperature down will make the house colder. It should not, provided the radiators are large enough and the heating is allowed enough time to reach the thermostat setting. The radiators may feel less fiercely hot, but they can still heat the room comfortably.
Modern condensing boilers with radiators
Try setting the central heating flow temperature to 60°C. If the house warms up comfortably, reduce it by five degrees and monitor the result for a few days. Many reasonably insulated properties will stay comfortable at 50°C to 55°C during milder weather.
Older homes may need a higher temperature when it is particularly cold. Across Bognor, Rose Green and Elmer, we see plenty of solid-walled properties, exposed extensions and rooms with older radiators. In those situations, a setting closer to 65°C or 70°C may be needed during a cold snap.
Older or non-condensing boilers
Older boilers were often designed to run at higher temperatures, commonly between 70°C and 80°C. Do not assume that advice for a new condensing boiler applies to an older appliance. Check the manufacturer’s instructions or ask a qualified heating engineer before making a large adjustment.
Underfloor heating
Underfloor heating normally operates at a lower water temperature than radiators, often around 35°C to 45°C. Many systems use a blending valve at the manifold to reduce the temperature before water enters the floor loops. The boiler itself may therefore be set higher than the temperature shown at the manifold.
A floor can take several hours to respond, so avoid repeatedly turning the setting up because the room has not warmed straight away. Slow and steady operation usually produces better comfort and efficiency.
How to Adjust Your Boiler Flow Temperature
On many modern boilers, the central heating temperature is controlled by a button or dial marked with a radiator symbol. This is separate from the hot water setting, which is usually identified by a tap symbol. Some boilers use a digital menu, so keep the instruction manual handy if the controls are not obvious.
A practical way to find a suitable setting is:
- Make a note of the current flow temperature before changing anything.
- Set the heating flow temperature to around 60°C.
- Leave the room thermostat at its normal setting.
- Give the system a day or two to settle.
- If every room heats comfortably, reduce the flow temperature by 5°C.
- If rooms struggle to warm up, increase it slightly and check for other problems.
Change one setting at a time. If you adjust the boiler, thermostat and radiator valves together, it becomes difficult to tell which change has helped.
Adjusting it through the seasons
A lower setting often works well in spring and autumn, while colder winter days may require a modest increase. If you have weather compensation controls, the boiler may adjust its flow temperature automatically according to the outdoor temperature. This generally gives smoother heating than manually changing the boiler every few weeks.
Signs the temperature is too high
- Radiators become extremely hot very quickly.
- The boiler frequently switches on and off for short periods.
- Rooms overshoot the thermostat temperature.
- Gas use remains high despite reasonable heating times.
Short bursts of operation, known as cycling, can also be caused by an oversized boiler, poor system balancing or restricted circulation. Lowering the flow temperature may help, but it will not solve every underlying fault.
Signs the temperature is too low
- The home takes an unusually long time to warm up.
- Some rooms never reach the thermostat setting.
- Radiators only feel lukewarm during very cold weather.
- A hot water cylinder does not reach the required temperature.
If only one radiator is cold, the boiler temperature is unlikely to be the main problem. The radiator may need bleeding, its valve could be stuck or the system may need balancing.
Efficiency, Safety and Professional Support
Flow temperature is only one part of heating efficiency. A well-insulated home with modern, correctly sized radiators can usually run at a lower temperature than a draughty property with small radiators. Loft insulation, sealed window gaps and sensible thermostat programming can all reduce the amount of heat the boiler needs to produce.
Boiler controls matter too. A room thermostat, working thermostatic radiator valves and suitable timing controls prevent unnecessary heating. If your boiler is old or cannot operate effectively at lower temperatures, a properly specified boiler installation may provide better control, but replacing an appliance should follow a proper assessment rather than guesswork.
Take extra care if your boiler also heats a stored hot water cylinder. Some systems use the same flow temperature for heating and hot water. Reducing it too far could prevent the cylinder from reaching a safe storage temperature. Cylinder arrangements, mixing valves and controls vary, so seek professional advice if you are unsure.
Never remove the boiler casing or alter internal components yourself. Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer if the boiler shows fault codes, loses pressure repeatedly, makes unusual noises or fails to heat the property reliably. Persistent cold spots, frequent cycling and controls that do not respond also deserve proper investigation. Finding the Best Setting for Your Home
For a modern condensing boiler serving radiators, start at about 60°C and gradually reduce the temperature while the home remains comfortable. Around 50°C to 55°C may work during mild weather, while poorly insulated properties or very cold conditions can require 65°C or more. Underfloor heating generally needs a much lower temperature at the floor circuit.
The best setting is the lowest one that heats every room properly without making the boiler work for excessive periods.
